This course is designed to give students an introduction to health care and related careers utilizing competency-based instruction and practice. This course is designed to give students an introduction to health care and related careers utilizing competency-based instruction and practice. The related course of study includes basic anatomy and physiology, common medical conditions and related care, safety and mobility, certification in adult CPR/AED, infant/child CPR, and First Aid. Students engage in hands-on experiences to learn specific skills associated with patient care such as vital signs, bed making, bathing, positioning, and ambulation. This course also includes extensive medical terminology and guidelines for communicating, observing, and documenting in health care facilities. There is also review of infection control, ethical and legal issues, coping with illness, and death and dying, and the health care team.

This course is designed to give students the opportunity to experience hands-on training in health care settings. Students will participate in three (3) clinical rotations: acute hospital care, long-term care, and an internship or cooperative experience. During these rotations, students will provide direct patient care in medical/surgical and long-term care and will job shadow in a variety of medical departments including: radiology, nuclear medicine, health education, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, pediatrics, obstetrics, same day surgery, emergency room, central sterilization, ultrasound, MRI, and CCU/ICU.

This course utilizes competency-based instruction and practice to further prepare students to gain proficiency in the performance of state mandated skills associated with nursing assistant training. The course of study also includes care of the elderly and chronically ill, dementia, pediatrics, obstetrics, home health care, rehabilitation and restorative care, employment opportunities and career growth, anatomy and physiology, common disorders and related care, journal writings based on clinical experiences, and cultural sensitivity. Upon completion of the program, students may be eligible to test for nursing assistant and home health aide certifications with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

This course utilizes competency-based instruction and practice to further prepare students to gain proficiency in the performance of state mandated skills associated with nursing assistant training. The course of study includes all aspects of the CPA course. Additionally, students at this level receive more extensive written assessments, accelerated medical terminology and skill lab participation, and additional research projects, including supplemental textbook and independent reading assignments. Students at this level learn and utilize the APA format of research writing to prepare for college.
