The Business Technology program is designed to help the student develop competency skills needed for a career in business and/or to prepare them to further their education at a business college. Students will develop skills in the areas of finance, marketing and management. (See your program instructor for a list of suggested academic electives.)

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:
Computer Applications is a necessity in today’s day and age and the foundation for a career in business! Students will use the popular computer application programs to learn how to properly format a variety of documents including a résumé and learn features they never knew existed! Desktop publishing activities will include designing a variety of publications used in starting up a small business including stationery, letterhead, business card, coupon flyer, advertisement, brochure, and more!

Office Procedures prepares the student for the variety of tasks in today’s office including creating effective documents, delivering a presentation, understanding financial information, time and workstation management, office safety, how to plan meetings, make travel arrangements, maintain records, process mail, effective telephone communications, and job skills. Students will use a variety of office machines including a digital camera, 10-key calculator, scanner, fax, and copier. Students will complete a hands-on business simulation.

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:
Marketing is when a company tries to find out what its customers want and then develops products accordingly. Students will decide upon a service or product to market and compete in teams for sales. Students will learn the four P’s of marketing strategy (product, place, price, and promotion), the impact of marketing, how economics affects marketing, how to use market research, understand what motivates buyers, how to compete for market segments, e-commerce, develop successful products or services, determine pricing, types of promotion, and more!

Students will learn how the growth of “social media” (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and cell phones) has impacted the way organizations communicate and are able to market their product/service. The internet is the largest advertising market. Students are challenged to be creative and innovative with social media as well as demonstrate how an effective web page design and e-commerce can affect their business.

DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:
Accounting is beneficial for personal, college or business use. Every industry needs an accountant to handle the daily financial transactions. It’s what keeps American business going! Students will learn accounting concepts and procedures for a service business organized as a proprietorship and a merchandising business organized as a corporation. Students work through the accounting cycle for a proprietorship, gain knowledge of banking practices, and develop an understanding of business and financial practices. Students will learn corporation accounting, management accounting and cost accounting for a manufacturing business while recording purchases and sales, using a voucher system, budgetary and inventory planning, handling uncollectible accounts, plant assets, and more! Curriculum includes understanding and using the computer and spreadsheets. Students obtain real-life experience working on accounting simulations and working papers.

Small Business Management & Entrepreneurship approaches business operations from the entrepreneurial and management perspective. Students will develop a business plan for starting up a service or retail business. Students will learn about business and its environment, forms of business ownership and the law, information and communication systems including establishing an e-commerce business, management responsibilities, financial management, production and marketing management and human resources management. Aspects of leadership, job management, work improvement, training and orientation, performance evaluation, and effective employee/supervisor relationships are covered. Students may be eligible to manage the school store and/or an online school store.

Business Law will discuss the court system, tort law, consumer law, employment law and contract law and help students understand the legalities involved in running a business. Topics covered in class discussions include corporate regulations, environmental laws, cyberlaw and internet transactions. Students will role play for the defense and/or plaintiff/prosecutor, make decisions on case studies and discuss landmark cases.
